A record employment total still leaves a local search to do

The June 2023 employment headline described the whole population. Filling a specific vacancy still depended on finding people with the relevant skills, location, availability and interest in that particular role.

A national record needs context

ONS estimated that the number of people in employment reached a record in February to April 2023, with employees and self-employed workers both contributing to the increase. The employment rate was estimated at 76.0%. These related statistics describe different things: one is a number of people, while the other expresses employment relative to an age-defined population.

A growing population can affect the relationship between a count and a rate. Neither measure identifies how many candidates would accept a particular commute, shift pattern or salary. The recruitment lesson is to use national context to frame questions while building the local, occupation-specific evidence needed to answer an employer’s actual hiring challenge.

The talent pool close to the vacancy

Before promising a shortlist, translate a role into a realistic search geography and a small set of essential criteria. Distinguish statutory or professional requirements from preferences. For a healthcare assignment, the relevant professional background and agreed verification process matter far more than a broad claim that the country has a record number of people working.

A talent map should record its coverage and limitations. A list of employers is different from a list of people approached, and an interested response is different from an available candidate. Keeping these stages separate gives hiring managers a more honest view of the search and avoids confusing research volume with appointment readiness.

Research the search you actually have

Key Med can support talent mapping and candidate sourcing around an agreed role definition. Researchers can organise target organisations, locations and relevant experience, then maintain clear records of outreach and responses where authorised. Screening questions should follow the client’s approved criteria, with uncertain cases escalated rather than resolved through assumptions about credentials.

Begin with one hard-to-fill role and review what the first research cycle reveals. If geography or requirements constrain the market, present specific options for the employer to consider. The result should be a better-informed brief and visible research work; national employment records cannot substantiate a guaranteed candidate supply or a guaranteed time to hire.
