A permanent hire shapes more than a vacancy list. A useful brief brings together the work to be done, the team environment and the expectations that make an appointment sustainable.

Make the brief useful

Define the essential skills, genuine preferences, salary range and working arrangements. Discuss the reasons someone would join and the questions likely to affect acceptance. A clear distinction between requirements and preferences helps keep the search focused without excluding relevant experience.

Build a relevant shortlist

Agree the research and attraction approach, screening questions and evidence needed for a submission. Record the candidate’s understanding of the opportunity and the points still to explore. A shortlist should help a hiring team assess fit rather than simply add more CVs to a queue. Agree how unsuccessful candidates will receive feedback and when the search brief should be reviewed.

Keep the decision moving

Coordinate interview stages, feedback and approved offer communication. Discuss notice periods and practical start-date dependencies early. The employer retains the employment decision and contractual commitments. Search scope, terms, replacement arrangements if any and responsibilities are confirmed in writing before work begins.
