What one trust’s response revealed
On 9 March 2023, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust published its response to the annual NHS Staff Survey. Alongside positive findings, it identified work pressure, burnout, development, diversity in senior roles, recruitment and retention as areas requiring attention. This was one employer’s published account, rather than a claim that every NHS organisation had identical results.
The practical recruitment lesson was to examine the experience behind the employer message. Our interpretation is that a campaign becomes more useful when the recruiting manager can explain what a new colleague will encounter, which improvements are under way and who owns the work. Attractive copy alone cannot resolve an operational difficulty.
Can the vacancy promise survive the interview?
A vacancy can remain difficult to fill when its description promises a working environment that candidates cannot recognise during interviews. Recruitment staff therefore need specific answers about induction, supervision, shift expectations and development. If those answers change between the advert and the offer, confidence can fall before the employment relationship has started.
Staff survey data also needs careful handling. A broad organisational score is not proof of the experience in one ward or department, and small teams should not be exposed through identifiable feedback. A useful briefing combines appropriately aggregated findings with a manager’s approved account of the role, avoiding selective claims that hide unresolved concerns.
Connect the briefing to the new-starter handover
Key Med can support the administrative connection between people teams and recruitment desks. Within an agreed scope, we can maintain vacancy briefing questions, record approved answers, update candidate communications and organise check-ins before a start date. The employer remains responsible for its workplace commitments, staff support and decisions about organisational change.
A practical starting point is a short promise register for each campaign: what has been said, who approved it and where a candidate can ask questions. Review withdrawn applications and early departures alongside recruitment activity, without claiming that one metric proves a cause. This gives managers a clearer conversation about the next campaign.
