Newly qualified nurses needed a pipeline built around real milestones

The NMC’s November 2023 update recorded growth and strong domestic joining numbers. Recruitment teams still had to coordinate course completion, registration, employment checks and induction without treating one milestone as proof that every later step was finished.

The joining figures in context

On 30 November 2023, the Nursing and Midwifery Council reported a register of 808,488 professionals and described increased joining activity in the six months to September. Its release explained that programme-completion timing could influence when newly qualified people joined. The figures represented eligibility to practise, not a list of individuals available to begin a particular job.

This helps explain why recruitment pipelines should be milestone-based. Our interpretation is that a planned graduation date, confirmation of programme completion, registration and an employer’s readiness for a start are separate pieces of information. They can move at different speeds, and national joining patterns do not remove the need to verify each candidate’s position.

Several milestones stand between study and a start

New entrants can receive requests from universities, regulators and employers within a short period. Repeating an unexplained document request or quoting an uncertain start date can make that transition harder. A recruiter should be able to say which step is outstanding, which organisation owns it and what the candidate needs to do next.

Managers also need to plan the receiving environment. Interview availability, occupational requirements, pre-employment checks and induction arrangements all need coordination through the employer’s process. Recruitment staff should avoid describing a person as ready simply because one external milestone has been reached, particularly where a decision depends on professional or clinical review.

Keep each handover visible

Key Med can maintain candidate milestone trackers, coordinate interview slots and organise approved onboarding communications. We can flag missing information and prepare a concise handover to the employer’s recruitment or people team. Registration decisions remain with the regulator, and the employer retains responsibility for its employment checks, supervision and suitability decisions.

A useful campaign review follows the same cohort from initial interest to confirmed start, with dates and reasons for delays recorded consistently. Analyse where candidates needed clarification and which handovers caused repeated chasing. This produces practical improvements to the next intake without assuming that a larger national register automatically shortens local recruitment lead times.
