The vacancy market cools
The release estimated 1.124 million vacancies for December 2022 to February 2023, down 51,000 on the quarter. It described an eighth successive quarterly fall, with survey respondents identifying economic pressures as a constraint on recruitment. This was a dated measure of external recruitment demand, rather than a count of agencies’ live assignments.
A declining national total can coexist with urgent local hiring and difficult specialist searches. Its value is context for a commercial discussion, not a reason to abandon a sector. The practical interpretation is to test whether an employer’s vacancy represents an active decision, a contingency plan or a role awaiting internal approval.
Is this role ready to recruit?
Unqualified vacancies consume researcher time and can disappoint candidates who invest in a process that never starts. Ask who owns the appointment, which budget is approved, what the intended start date means and when interviewers are available. An employer unable to answer may still be a valuable relationship, but the assignment needs a different priority.
Introduce a visible distinction between active recruitment, pending approval and market exploration. Review changes at an agreed interval instead of allowing old roles to remain permanently urgent. Candidate conversations should reflect the true stage of the opportunity, with realistic next steps and no invented deadline designed simply to generate interest.
Qualify the brief before sourcing
Key Med can help maintain vacancy records, research target talent and coordinate agreed sourcing activity against approved priorities. A dedicated researcher can prepare market maps for exploratory work while candidate outreach is reserved for roles authorised to proceed. Scope, permitted systems and the person who approves contact should be clear before delivery starts.
For a pilot, choose a small vacancy group and document the qualification questions, status definitions and review owner. Measure work completed and identify where client decisions are holding progress. The aim is a better allocation of effort and a clearer candidate experience; it is not a promise that a falling market produces effortless placements.
