The right that began in April
Eligible employees gained a day-one entitlement to up to one working week of unpaid carer’s leave in a rolling 12-month period to provide or arrange care for a dependant with a long-term care need. Leave could be taken in half days, full days or a whole week, subject to the scheme’s rules.
A week reflected the employee’s working pattern; it did not necessarily mean five days for every person. The entitlement also was not a separate week for each dependant. Employers needed to apply the detailed notice and administration requirements, rather than relying on a simplified sentence in a recruitment update.
A short absence can cross several handovers
In a busy recruitment operation, a half-day absence can overlap with an interview, a candidate start or a payroll cut-off. The difficulty is often the lack of a clear task owner, rather than the length of the absence. A shared availability calendar helps only when important commitments are connected with it.
Cover notes should focus on work that needs action: which candidate is expecting a call, what the client has approved and where an outstanding question belongs. They should not circulate a dependant’s medical history. The employer can maintain the records required for the leave process through an appropriately restricted channel.
A named backup makes that task transfer easier.
Keep cover information current and proportionate
Key Med Solutions can help prepare recruitment task handovers, maintain client-approved absence status fields and coordinate cover for interviews or routine candidate updates. The employer should decide entitlement and approve the policy. External support should receive only the information necessary to perform the agreed work.
For variable working patterns, an administrator can gather the relevant hours records for the client’s review, while payroll or HR confirms the calculation. A central exception queue is useful where a record is incomplete. Guessing a balance because someone needs a quick answer is less helpful than making the missing input clear.
The April 2024 lesson is to make short, legitimate absences operationally ordinary. A process with named backups and current task notes reduces dependence on informal memory. Key Med can support that continuity, while leave decisions, statutory interpretation and any individual employment advice remain with the employer and appropriate advisers.
