A lower total, uneven local effects
ONS reported 69,000 working days lost to labour disputes in November 2023, the lowest monthly figure since May 2022. It also said more than half of disputes were in transport, storage, information and communication industries. The release was published on 16 January 2024 and described an earlier month, rather than providing a live travel forecast.
A national disruption measure and a candidate’s ability to attend are different questions. A single cancelled connection can affect an important interview even when the overall figure falls. Our interpretation is to design a reasonable contingency into coordination, while checking current conditions and employer instructions separately from any retrospective statistical account.
Think through the journey to interview
Confirm interview format, location, arrival instructions and the contact for problems when arranging the appointment. If a remote alternative is possible, agree it with the employer in advance. Avoid asking a candidate to make a costly journey based on an unconfirmed assumption, and avoid changing an assessment format without the hiring team’s authorisation.
When plans change, one coordinator should own the update and acknowledgement process. Send only the information each participant needs, keep calendar invitations consistent and distinguish a request to reschedule from a confirmed new time. This helps prevent a manageable logistical issue from becoming an apparent failure of candidate interest or professionalism.
Have an agreed alternative ready
Key Med can provide interview coordination and recruitment administration within agreed communication rules. Support might include checking confirmations, maintaining the interview calendar and routing attendance problems to the hiring manager. It can also include preparing approved alternative instructions, so the agency does not have to reconstruct the same response during each disruption.
Test the workflow on a defined campaign and review missed confirmations, duplicate invitations and unresolved changes. Employers retain control of assessment methods and any individual accommodation decisions. The practical goal is a more dependable administrative handover, without claiming that a coordinator can predict transport disruption or guarantee attendance from a national labour-market release.
