Leave and pay remain different questions
The Employment Rights Act changes removed the service qualification for statutory paternity leave and unpaid parental leave. HMRC’s April employer bulletin confirmed that statutory paternity pay retained its separate eligibility requirements, including the relevant 26-week service condition. A day-one leave right should therefore not be described as universal day-one paid leave.
Notice and other conditions still mattered, with transitional notice arrangements for some newly eligible parents. Employers needed to use the relevant guidance for the circumstances. Recruiters should not try to resolve a detailed case by relying on an old onboarding statement that family leave is unavailable during an initial service period.
A family request can arrive with a new starter
Recruitment processes often focus on whether someone can begin on the agreed date. They may give less attention to how a new employee can raise an upcoming leave request after joining. A clear handover identifies the HR contact and approved information source without asking candidates to disclose unnecessary family plans during selection.
For scheduling, the important inputs are the employer’s approved absence and cover instructions. A manager should not treat short service as a reason to ignore a request under an outdated policy. At the same time, an administrator should not approve eligibility or pay merely because the candidate mentions the new rules.
The onboarding pack should also identify where employees can find the approved policy after their initial recruitment contact has ended.
Give the receiving team usable information
Key Med Solutions can help review client-approved onboarding checklists, remove superseded service-period wording and ensure the correct employer contact appears in new-starter materials. Any substantive policy decision should be approved by HR and legal advisers before the material is released.
Interview and booking support can then coordinate practical dates once the employer has confirmed its instructions. A tracker can distinguish a question raised, a formal request received and an approved absence, keeping the responsible owner visible. Those distinctions prevent a provisional discussion from becoming an assumed rota commitment.
The April 2026 lesson is to make family-leave information accessible from the start while keeping the separate pay rules clear. Key Med can provide administrative coordination and task cover. Employers and appropriate advisers retain responsibility for entitlement, notice, payroll and individual employment advice.
