The register’s changing composition and growth
On 29 July 2026, the Nursing and Midwifery Council published an update showing its register at 867,935 professionals. It highlighted increased ethnic diversity and a slower rate of overall growth, alongside fewer international joiners. The release described registered professionals and joining patterns, not a forecast of who would apply for an individual employer’s roles.
Our recruitment interpretation is that pipeline planning and inclusion need attention at the same time. National demographics can describe the workforce, but they do not establish an individual’s preferences, competence or availability. A useful recruitment process combines an accurate brief with respectful contact and evidence-based assessment of the person concerned.
National demographics do not describe an individual
A recruitment forecast can become fragile if it assumes that an earlier source of new candidates will continue unchanged. Teams need to examine their own enquiry, engagement and withdrawal information rather than extrapolating a headline. Candidate relationships and current preferences are often more useful to the next campaign than a large undifferentiated contact list.
An inclusive journey also requires attention to practical barriers. Explain the stages, provide a route to request adjustments and avoid unexplained jargon. Questions about professional requirements should be handled consistently, while matters requiring legal or regulatory advice go to appropriate specialists. Diversity figures should never be used to infer that a particular candidate needs or offers something without asking.
Keep candidate engagement specific and inclusive
Key Med can support candidate engagement, talent mapping and database administration under client-approved criteria. We can help organise current preferences, communication needs and unresolved questions within authorised systems, without collecting unnecessary sensitive data. The employer retains responsibility for selection standards, reasonable-adjustment decisions and professional suitability.
A useful campaign review looks at where people disengage and whether the next step was explained clearly. Check the information provided, the time awaiting a response and whether questions reached the right owner. We can help maintain that evidence and coordinate improvements, supporting an informed pipeline without claiming that national register growth guarantees hiring success or that one process removes every barrier.
