The rate and the boundary changed together
From 1 April 2024, the National Living Wage was £11.44 an hour for workers aged 21 and over. Before that, the National Living Wage category began at age 23. Other minimum-wage rates also rose. These figures describe the 2024–25 period and should not be copied into present-day offers.
The age-band change meant an inherited pay table could be structurally wrong even if one number had been updated. The responsible payroll team needed to confirm the applicable category and timing. Recruitment administration then needed to carry those approved instructions consistently through the records it controlled.
Where an old age band could remain
Old templates can outlive a central payroll update. An assignment form might retain separate 21–22 and 23-plus labels, while a consultant’s saved briefing document shows an earlier table. The risk is not limited to deliberate underpayment; disconnected information can also produce confused offers, unnecessary queries and time-consuming reconciliation.
A useful review identifies every place age bands are referenced and checks whether that information is actually needed there. Personal data should remain proportionate to the task. A public-facing vacancy advert normally needs an accurate approved rate and clear terms, rather than an unnecessary disclosure of an individual worker’s age.
The review can begin with a search for old age-band headings, then trace every result to its owner and intended use.
Refresh the linked records deliberately
Within agreed pay-and-bill administration, Key Med Solutions can help inventory templates, prepare records for payroll review and implement approved wording changes. A version register can show which files have been replaced and which external systems still need attention. The client retains responsibility for the pay decision and calculation.
For an agency with active assignments, the review should include existing work as well as new vacancies. A dated change list can be reconciled with upcoming timesheets and assignment extensions so that the same worker is not described differently in separate systems. Any uncertainty belongs in an exception queue for the authorised owner.
The enduring lesson is to review the shape of a pay table whenever eligibility changes. A correct headline rate is insufficient if the underlying categories are stale. Key Med can provide the administrative coordination that keeps approved information connected, while payroll specialists and the employer determine the legally correct treatment.
