The wider market behind the applications
ONS estimated unemployment at 4.7% for March to May 2025, higher than a year earlier and higher on the quarter. It also reported 727,000 vacancies in April to June 2025, down on the previous three-month period. These national measures provided context; they did not show the application volume or suitability of candidates for an individual employer.
Our practical interpretation is to prepare for a possible change in screening workload without predicting one from the headline alone. A greater number of people seeking work does not guarantee the professional background, location or working preferences required for a specialist vacancy. Recruiters need to assess the actual flow through their own application process.
Protect assessment when the queue grows
Agree essential and desirable criteria before reviewing applications, and give reviewers a consistent way to record evidence. Avoid adding unexplained filters simply because the queue is busy. For healthcare roles, relevant professional requirements and the employer’s approved checks remain central, while uncertain evidence should be escalated to the authorised decision-maker rather than rejected through an assumption.
Screening capacity also includes candidate communication. Set a realistic update rhythm and distinguish a review in progress from a rejection or a confirmed interview. If a role pauses, communicate the change clearly. An overloaded queue can damage a candidate experience even when the agency is generating plenty of activity, so monitor waiting time alongside the number of applications processed.
Make the screening workflow manageable
Key Med can support CV screening, recruitment administration and candidate engagement using client-approved questions and criteria. A defined team can organise applications, record relevant evidence and route exceptions for review. Final selection, suitability and appointment decisions remain with the employer or agency team responsible for them, with professional judgements handled by appropriately qualified people.
Begin with one vacancy group and calibrate a sample of screening decisions with the client before increasing volume. Review consistency, unresolved cases and communication delays, then adjust the workflow. This provides practical capacity while preserving judgement, without promising that a rise in unemployment makes a specialist hire easy or that automated filtering can replace a fair review.
