The protections that strengthened in October
The government confirmed the move from the 2024 reasonable-steps duty to all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment. The reforms also addressed harassment by third parties, such as customers and clients. The protections applied in England, Wales and Scotland; Northern Ireland’s equality framework remained devolved.
The change should not be described as if it had applied unchanged since October 2024. Employers needed to review the updated legislation and guidance, consider their circumstances and obtain appropriate advice. An operations team could support implementation, but could not determine the adequacy of prevention measures by updating a template alone.
A placement reaches beyond colleagues
A person’s working day may involve client staff, patients, visitors, customers or other external contacts. The practical risk review therefore needs to consider the real environment rather than only the employer’s own office. In healthcare-led recruitment, a placement handover should make clear how a worker can reach an accountable contact when concerns arise.
Out-of-hours reporting also deserves attention. A worker on an evening or weekend shift should not be left with a daytime number and no agreed escalation route. Sensitive concerns need trained, authorised handling; routing everything through a general bookings queue can obscure urgency and spread personal information.
A practical review should include a changed assignment, an unfamiliar site and an evening contact attempt, rather than testing only a routine daytime office example.
Connect the approved reporting and response routes
Key Med Solutions can help refresh client-approved onboarding information, maintain current placement contacts and coordinate the distribution of approved guidance. The employer and its specialist advisers should lead risk assessment, prevention decisions, training content and responses to individual reports.
A useful administrative check asks whether the reporting information remains correct after a site, manager or assignment changes. Completion records can show what was issued and when, without implying that a signed acknowledgement proves compliance. Any concern received by routine support staff should follow the employer’s agreed sensitive-escalation process.
The October 2026 lesson is to review the full placement environment and make the response route usable. Key Med can support the surrounding records and coordination. Legal interpretation, investigations and protective decisions remain with the employer and qualified professionals, using the newly commenced framework.
