Care visas in March 2024: keep the occupation and location in view

Care-worker dependant restrictions and England-specific CQC sponsorship requirements began in March 2024. Candidate communications needed to reflect the relevant occupation, location and transitional circumstances, with personal immigration questions directed to the appropriate adviser.

Two changes with different scopes

The changes restricted dependants for new care-worker and senior-care-worker entrants, with transitional exceptions. They also required providers sponsoring relevant roles in England to be registered with the Care Quality Commission and carrying on regulated activity. The Home Office’s impact assessment distinguished England from roles exclusively in the other UK nations.

That combination required more than replacing a sentence in a recruitment brochure. Occupation, location and the individual’s immigration history could matter. A candidate’s personal eligibility should be reviewed through the sponsor and an authorised immigration adviser, rather than inferred by a sourcing team from a general news headline.

Reset the candidate explanation

Family circumstances can be central to whether someone considers a move. A recruiter repeating an older assurance about dependants can therefore create serious confusion before an application is even considered. The better operational approach is to provide a dated, approved explanation and a clear route for questions that depend on individual circumstances.

The provider side also needed accurate records. A generic company profile did not establish that the entity recruiting for a particular service met the relevant sponsorship conditions. Recruitment briefs should identify the employer, work location and responsible sponsorship contact, with unresolved questions flagged before the search progresses.

Before an approved message is reused, check whether it describes a care occupation, a different health profession or a service operating in another UK nation.

Keep coordination inside an approved remit

Key Med Solutions can assist with reviewing approved candidate-facing materials, removing obsolete generic wording and maintaining a log of questions for the client’s sponsor team. That is administrative coordination. It does not make Key Med a visa sponsor or authorise it to provide personal immigration advice.

Talent-mapping support can also distinguish care roles from nursing, medical and allied-health searches, and keep the relevant geography visible. Candidate-engagement notes can record that an approved information source was shared, without collecting unnecessary family information or making a promise about the outcome of a future application.

The March 2024 lesson is that healthcare is too broad a label for immigration communications. A precise brief helps recruiters stay within confirmed facts. Later rule changes must be checked separately; this historical article should not be used as a complete guide to the rules applying to a new application today.
