The unemployment figure and its limits
ONS estimated a 5.2% unemployment rate for October to December 2025, up both quarterly and annually in that release. It also reported lower economic inactivity. These measures did not identify the number of qualified applicants for a particular role or show how long candidates were waiting for decisions from any individual recruitment organisation.
Our interpretation is that agencies should test their communication process rather than presume the aggregate figure guarantees an abundance of suitable people. If application queues do grow, the risk is not only screening delay. Candidates may be left unable to distinguish a role still being considered from a role that has paused or already reached a decision.
The person waiting for an answer
Agree when a candidate can expect an update and what a coordinator is authorised to say when the employer has not responded. An honest holding message is useful only if it reflects the real stage and includes a realistic next step. Avoid repeated promises of imminent feedback that the agency cannot obtain or independently approve.
Escalation rules should cover paused roles, missed client decision dates and candidates awaiting clarification. Track the age of outstanding cases, not just the number of contacts made. For specialist healthcare recruitment, communication quality sits alongside professional and compliance requirements; urgency or a larger candidate pool does not remove the need for the relevant checks.
Make response standards part of delivery
Key Med can support candidate engagement and consultant care using approved templates, status definitions and escalation routes. A scoped team can maintain the contact schedule, identify stale cases and prepare an exception list for consultants. Final selection and employer decisions remain with the responsible client team; administrative support should not invent an outcome to clear a queue.
Pilot the arrangement on one campaign and inspect a sample of messages against the actual vacancy status. Review unresolved waiting time and the clarity of handovers, then refine the rhythm. This improves the reliability of the process the agency controls without promising a response from every employer or presenting a national unemployment figure as evidence about an individual candidate.
