People, jobs and the second-job estimate
ONS estimated that 3.7% of people in employment had a second job in May to July 2026, equivalent to 1.283 million people. The number was lower than a year earlier but higher in the latest quarter. The bulletin described a national survey estimate, not the prevalence of second jobs within a particular agency’s candidate database or healthcare speciality.
Our operational interpretation is to avoid counting records or possible assignments as independent people available for work. A candidate may hold more than one role or register through more than one channel. That does not establish their availability for the next booking, their motivation for working or any issue with suitability; those questions require relevant individual information.
A booking belongs to a person’s real diary
Ask about the availability needed for the prospective assignment and explain why the information is relevant. Keep records current and restrict access appropriately. Do not infer financial difficulty, lower commitment or a willingness to accept extra shifts from the fact that someone has a second job. A useful conversation focuses on the person’s stated preferences and the authorised role requirements.
Booking teams should reconcile duplicate records and confirm each assignment rather than relying on a broad available label. Where other commitments affect the proposed schedule, route the relevant question through the client-approved process. Working-time obligations, contractual restrictions and clinical-safety decisions require the responsible employer or appropriate professional; a coordinator should not make those determinations from an aggregate statistic.
Refresh availability before confirming cover
Key Med can assist database maintenance, bookings administration and candidate engagement within a defined workflow. Support can identify possible duplicate records for review, request current availability and maintain clear booking confirmations. It should not merge uncertain identities automatically or use information collected for one purpose to make unrelated judgements about a candidate’s circumstances.
Start by reviewing one candidate group for duplicate entries and stale availability, with a clear rule for verifying changes. Track the unresolved cases and give consultants a concise action list. This can improve the reliability of the operational record without claiming that a database clean-up creates additional workforce capacity or that a national second-jobs estimate describes every registered person.
